Intergenerational ethics discussion for UW retirees and Seattle-area high school students
Headlines these days are often about naming and renaming public buildings, and conflicts over school policies that contradict what parents want. If you’re a high school student interested in hashing out issues like these with older people who may feel differently, here’s your chance.
Philosophy Teaching and Learning Association (PLATO) and the University of Washington are co-sponsoring a special in-person, interactive discussion of issues like these for Seattle-area high school students and members of the UW Retirement Association.
This event is free, in-person, and interactive. Spots are limited and we encourage students to apply for what will no doubt be a lively 90-minute session. And don’t worry, no philosophy experience necessary!
- When: Oct. 3, 2022, 5-6:30 pm PT
- Where: In person at Kane Hall UW

Ethics and philosophy for middle school students, free online from PLATO
Why do we care about some animals but not others? Is it right to think natural resources are here for humans to use? And why do scientific “facts” sometimes change over time?
The Philosophy Learning and Teaching Organization (PLATO) is offering three free, online courses for middle-schoolers aged 11-14 to discuss these and many other thought-provoking questions.
Students don’t need any experience in philosophy to sign up for classes in Animal Ethics (fall), Environmental Ethics (winter) or the Philosophy of Science (spring). Each course meets on Zoom once a week for four weeks from 7 pm to 8:15 pm Eastern Time (4 pm to 5:15 pm Pacific).
The classes are interactive and students can sign up for one, two or three of them. Applications are available on the PLATO website and are due Sept. 30.
Classes are entirely free, thanks to a grant from Charles Anderson and Pamela Gross through the San Juan Island Community Foundation
